Tyler Courtney took a leap of faith heading into the 2021 racing season as a full-time winged sprint car racer. The driver for Clauson-Marshall Racing has recently found All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane three times in a four race stretch to knock off his first career All Star Circuit of Champions win. “Sunshine” looked for a new challenge in his already successful career at just 27-years-old.

Tyler Courtney is a USAC champion at the non-wing sprint car and midget levels. While proudly capturing both for Clauson-Marshall Racing, the team racing in memory of Bryan Clauson has begun to feel the success of the winged sprint car world.

“With the adventure we started this year with going winged racing, it’s almost a jump start or restart to a career. It’s been awesome and a good year so far and hopefully we can keep going.”

While Courtney has begun to capture the checkered flag over some of the best winged sprint car drivers in the world, Courtney still finds learning the speed of winged racing and learning new tracks challenging on a near nightly basis.

“Learning the tracks I haven’t been to yet have been the harder part even with going to tracks I have been to with the non-wing car. A lot of things you do are the same, but it’s at a lot faster pace,” notes Courtney. “A lot of places we are going two seconds faster than we do in the non-wing car. That’s a lot stuff happening in a short amount of time.”

The Indianapolis, Indiana native has shown no signs of being a rookie to the winged category of sprint car racing entering the summer stretch by collecting three wins and three podium finishes between May 14th and May 31st. This consistent showing of speed has earned Courtney the point lead with the All Stars.

“I definitely don’t think we expected to be either at this point in the season,” chuckled Courtney in the pits at the Port Royal Speedway. “Here we are, and we had a really good first part of the season, but we are getting ready to get in the heart of it. We have to keeping digging and keep rolling.”

While nobody questioned the lack of ability in Tyler Courtney, being the point leader in the No. 7BC over the likes of Justin Peck, Ian Madsen, and Cory Eliason who have been running winged sprint cars for years has surpassed everyone’s expectations of “Sunshine” thus far.

As for the future, Courtney would be thrilled to maybe one day jump on the World of Outlaw tour with his dedicated team and partners. “Running the Outlaw tour is our goal but we’re in no hurry to get there. We have a really good group of guys with a lot of great sponsors and partners,” explains Courtney. “We still have a lot of learning to do and a lot of stuff to get together to be even close to getting ready for the Outlaw tour.”

The Clauson-Marshall Racing No. 7BC will be a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the 2021 All Star Circuit of Champions championship hunt.
