Krummel takes Underdog 20 at Day 1 of Danny Serrano Memorial

Day 1 of the Danny Serrano Memorial weekend is in the books and a full Friday night of racing that was a fitting tribute to Danny and his legacy at Bridgeport Motorsports Park.  130 cars were on the grounds in 5 classes of racing.

The modifieds had 3 sessions of practice which rewarded the quick time of each session with an automatic re-draw position in their modified triple 20 tomorrow.  39 modifieds were on the grounds looking to be fast time for one of the sessions.  Fastest times for each session were: Ryan Godown in session 1 @ 16.12; Peter Britten in session 2 @ 15.97 and Ryan Krachun in session 3 @ 16.07.

Day 1 was only practice and had 39 modifieds which was the most modifieds at Bridgeport Motorsports Park in the past 2 years with far more to arrive on Saturday.

The street stocks and their competitiveness was one of Danny’s favorite classes to discuss with any one.  A showdown that has been brewing all year between Rich Stinson and TJ Henry finally came together at Danny’s memorial race with a $1,000 to win street stock prize at stake.  It was a battle of wits and racing strategy from start to finish.  Henry and Stinson lead the field to green with Stinson taking the lead for 13 laps with TJ Henry side by side on most laps.  On lap 13 Stinson encountered lap traffic and Henry took the led just before the yellow flag flew.  Stinson jumped the restart and on the ensuing restart Henry switched to the top.  But on the second restart it was Rich Stinson taking the lead and then pulling away to take his 5th win of the season and his biggest win of his career.

The street stock top 5 was rounded out by TJ Henry, Brian Spencer, Lee Allen and Tom Willis.

Next was the Underdog 20 Crate race only for drivers with no wins during the season and this event was created by Danny Serrano for the drivers.  33 crates competed in the timed hot lap qualifying with the top 6 quickest times redrawing and the remainder of the field going to a heads up starting position based on their qualifying time.  The entire race was dominated by Howie Finch’s two 4 team cars as they battled one another for the lead.  The white 4 driven by Steve Davis lead the first 15 laps but on a late restart Brian Krummel took the lead on lap 16 and checked out on Davis and the field in the final 5 laps.   Brian Krummel wins his first time in any race car for over a year, his first time in the green #4 crate car and his first time at Bridgeport Motorsports Park.  Krummel plans to be in a 360 wingless sprint car for the first time tomorrow at Bridgeport.  A big weekend of firsts for the returning driver after a year off.

The crate top 10 was rounded out by Steve Davis, Wayne Weaver, Anthony Tramontanat, Tom Sherby, Travis Hill, John Meyer, Daniel Morgiwetz, Gregg Reed and Darren Cox.

The Mass 305 feature was the nightcap with Dave Brown taking the win from green checkered over a top five of Kevin Nagy, Jeff Geiges, Tim Tanner and CJ Faison.  Tim Tanner was crowned the Mass 305 2020 points champion.

The first night of the Danny Serrano 100 is in the books with solid fields of cars in every class and racing that Danny would for sure be proud to have at a race with his name on it.

Day 2 of the Danny Serrano 100 weekend is Saturday September 26 with modified triple 20s, 602 crates and east coast 360 sprint cars on the card with racing starting at 6:00.
