Race 1 at Iowa, Newgarden Wins

Josef Newgarden outran Will Power and Pato O’Ward to claim his fourth victory of the year, as he continued his dominant record at Iowa. Newgarden has officially led over half the laps ran at Iowa, and led over half the laps in the race. He was followed by O’Ward, Power, VeeKay, and Dixon.

The race was under caution early, as Jimmie Johnson went around out of turn 4 on lap 16, avoiding the wall. Johnson then jumped on an alternate strategy, moving his way up to through the field. When the caution came out on lap 140 for Rosenqvist, Johnson had worked his way up to 8th. After two more cautions, the field lined up for an 80 sprint to the end, on a single fuel run. Newgarden ran away, holding off Pato O’Ward as he took his fourth win in 2022 and fourth at Iowa. Newgarden moves up to 2nd in points, only 15 behind Ericsson, with Power 22 behind.
