It’s the month of May, the greatest month in INDYCAR, and that means the series is at Indianapolis. This week, they ran the road course in the GMR Grand Prix, which saw an old face return, and new faces at the front. An unusual Fast Six saw the series heavyweights miss out, and some new blood enter. Romain Grosjean was joined by Conor Daly, with Grosjean securing his first INDYCAR pole position. INDYCAR legend Juan Pablo Montoya made his return in the third Arrow McLaren, but started 25th, last of the pack.
At the start, Simon Pagenaud made contact with Conor Daly, sending him into the grass at turn 1. Rahal and O’Ward bailed on the turn going wide to avoid the mess. The incident brought out the full-course caution, as Daly was unable to restart his car. The race restarted on lap 4, and Grosjean wasted no time pulling out a lead over Jack Harvey. Harvey spent the first part of the race in the top 3, until a stall on pit road on lap 39 and then a subsequent flat tire forced him to repit. The young Dutchman, Rinus Veekay, took the effective lead on lap 44, passing Grosjean for 3rd in Turn 12. He never let it go, beating Grosjean through the last round of pit stops and taking the checkered flag to win his first Indycar race.
After this race, Scott Dixon retained his hold on the points heading into the Indianapolis 500 , with a 13 point lead over Alex Palou. Newgarden, O’Ward, Rahal, and Veekay are separated by only 13 points from P3 to P6.
