Mid-Atlantic Modified Report – Week 20

PORT ROYAL – STSS Speed Showcase – 200

10/17/20 – The 42 car field was led to green by Alex Yankowski and Danny Bouc on lap 1 of 200.  Yankowski led for the first 15 laps until Matt Williamson took over the lead on lap 16 with Matt Sheppard moving into 2nd place.

The red flat came out on lap 42 for Billy Pauch Jr. who had heavy wall contact with the car erupting into a ball of flames and barrel rolling several times caused by a stuck throttle down the back stretch.  Pauch Jr. emerged from the completely destroyed 96 car under his own power and was uninjured in the incident.  The backstretch wall was damaged and track crews made repairs for over an hour before racing could resume.

Racing resumed on lap 43 with Williamson continuing to lead Matt Sheppard, Alex Yankowski, Max McLaughlin and Anthony Perrago back to green.  Stewart Friesen moved into 6th place on lap 51 from his 39th provisional starting position with an eye on the leaders.

Williamson continued to hold his lead until lap 86 when Anthony Perrago moved into the lead followed by Matt Williamson, Stewart Friesen, Max McLaughlin, and Matt Sheppard.  Lap 88 saw caution 5 fly and the hot pits opened with Stewart Friesen the only top 5 leader pitting.

At lap 100 a scheduled fuel stop/hot pits caution stopped the field on the track for a fuel stop with Perrago leading Matt Williamson, Matt Sheppard, Max McLaughlin and Peter Britten.  Drivers had the choice to stay on track and receive fuel only or go into the hot pits for the 10 minute to make any adjustments and return on lap 100 in the back of the field in order they entered in the hot pits.  Only 8 cars did not pit and stayed on the track and moved to the front of the field for the restart.

When racing resumed after the scheduled lap 100 fuel or pit stop Andy Bachetti was the race leader followed by Rick Laubach, Stewart Friesen, Ryan Watt and Tyler Dipple.

On lap 105 Stewart Friesen took over the lead followed by Bachetti, Watt, Perrago and McLaughlin.

Friesen extended his lead to 4 seconds and continued to lead at lap 150 with Perrago, Bachetti, Williamson and McLaughlin in pursuit.

On lap 183 restart Matt Williamson made the pass on Friesen for the lead and held on through one more restart by running the inside line which was enough to hold off Friesen who was running up next to the wall.   But it was Williamson taking the checkered flag at lap 200 for the $53,000 win and his first Short Track Super Series win.

10/15/20 – The modified 40 lap feature was led to green by JoJo Watson and Matt Shepherd with Watson taking the lead for 3 laps when Sheppard took over the lead on a lap 4 restart.  Despite 8 cautions and resulting restarts Sheppard continued to dominate the remainder of the race and checked out on the field with a 5 second margin of victory.

In victory lane Sheppard noted “I was not liking all those cautions in the beginning and the cushion was treacherous but the car was good anywhere with gripe in the middle and the bottom and in the end I was just driving very carefully with the lead we had.  This was a lot of fun with a good car and a real good track.”
