Mid-Atlantic Modified Report Week 1

PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

It’s the first week of June and the Modified racing season in DE, NJ & PA is starting here and there but should be going full force by July 4 if all goes well with the continuing Covid-19 recovery plans of each state.

The first modified track to start racing this season was Penn Can who held their 3rd race of the season this past weekend “The Mike Colsten Memorial 51”.   It was Joey Grammes going green to checkered followed by Jeff Strunk driving a one night stand in Butch Getz’s #15.  The top 5 was rounded out by the New Yorkers again Brett Tonkin, David Schilling and Alex Tonkin.

The first two events were won by Dave Marcuccilli and Kevin Titus.  Joey Grammes had strong top 5 runs going in both of the first two races only to fall out due to mechanical issues.  Grammes third time was the charm as the consistent front running turned into his first win of the season in his third outing of the season.

Penn Can’s next event is “Hall of Fame Night” on June 12 racing at 7:15 with Modifieds and a full regular program of racing with the extra attraction of the “Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour”.  It is also the opening of their season point’s championship racing.

SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES

Brett Deyo’s Short Track Super Series took a little Covid-19 road trip south to Potomac Speedway in Maryland to run the STSS South region point’s race #2.   Matt Shepherd has been on a slow start this season; but Maryland proved to be the answer and Shepard won his first STSS $5,200 feature event of the season in defense of his double South and North region titles.  The stellar 22 car field saw Shepard followed by Stewart Friesen, Billy Pauch Jr, Mike Gular and Larry Wight.  Ryan Watt had a spec 358, tangled early in the feature, went to pits and back of field but was still able to collect an 8th place finish.

The STSS moves to Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, PA for the “Anthracit Assault” event on Tuesday June 16 for a duel North and South region point event.

DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

Saturday was the opening night of the DIS season and point’s championship and things picked up in 2020 right where they left off in 2019 with the Watson brothers continuing their dominance.  It was Jojo Watson leading the race from green to checkered flag with his brother Jordan Watson running second on this day.   The top 5 was rounded out by Ricky Elliot in the Gary Simpson 12K, Robert Dutton and Pat Wall.   A strong continent of visiting teams included Pat Wall, Don Cogdill, Neal Williams, Brent Ballard and Dylan Swinehart.

DIS is back in action on Friday night June 12th with “Friday Night Lights at the Speedway” featuring $2,500 to win modified event with a regular racing program starting at 7:00 PM.
