SPORTSMAN PIT NOTES – 7/26/25

Shannon Slaughter won her first race from the 2nd starting position. She led from green to checkered, negotiated three restarts and held off a charging Addison Meitzler to pick up her first Grandview Sportsman win.
In victory lane Shannon reflected “With 2-3 laps to go I can see Addison get under me and I just concentrated on hitting my marks and it turned out to be enough to hold on for the win.”
“We drove 5 hours to pick this car up from New York state in May. We have struggled to get this car together and to run right.”
“I am in a state of disbelief right now and it’s like a dream come true.”

Back at the trailer Shannon noted “I started racing at 14 and won a kart championship in my 2nd year and then moved up to micros. I had the opportunity to run a sportsman modified with the Gilmores last year. We bought this car of our own from Upper New York state in May and now here we are in victory lane at Grandview.”
“Saturday was the perfect night. My whole family came to watch something that doesn’t happen too often. It was the best feeling in the world to pull off my biggest career win with my whole family there. Heat race I started 2nd, about halfway through the race I made a pass to take the lead and picked up the heat win.
“Feature time I lined up 2nd. This was the first feature I qualified for this season and my first feature in this car. I knew it would probably be my best shot at a win starting in the front row, so I gave it everything I had from the drop of the green. We are a low budget team but splurged and bought a new right rear for the feature and I believe it made a difference.”

“I committed to the outside on every restart, stayed up there and it paid off. With running up top it was a struggle to keep my car from getting tight on entry. The final restart had some of Grandview’s best right behind me. I knew I had to hit my marks. I just kept telling myself to stay calm, run my race and if it’s my race to win I will win it, don’t let them bother me. On the final restart I ran it as hard as I could to make sure the car didn’t push, and I hit grip coming off. It was a good close race coming to the checkered which I hope was exciting for the fans. I can’t thank everyone enough who helped me get to this point. It still doesn’t feel real. This weekend has been a dream come true.”

Addison Meitzler finished 2nd from his 11th starting position. Addison continued his trend this year of finishing in the top three or being towed to the pits before the finish. Addison has posted two wins, this second and a 4th in the races that he has been able to make it to the end.

Addison commented “Car was good in the heat, and we won from 7th. We didn’t change a whole lot for feature and worked forward pretty much on a top dominant track. I was able to run the bottom where no one else was and make it work. The last 3 laps raced clean side by side just couldn’t pull it off. Top was too good, but you can’t pass them if you follow them.”

Colin Cox finished 3rd from his 16th starting position. Colin has made his back to front runs almost a weekly occurrence and has opened a 500 point lead over Mikey Schneck in the sportsmen points standings.
Colin stated “Another good night overall and very good points tonight. We were rolling pretty good in the heat running six and I hit the yuke tire and it came out on the track to bring out the yellow. I got sent to the back for bringing out the yellow. Jessie Landis and Brad Brightbill got together on the final lap, and I was able to get under both of them to get the last qualifying spot which definitely helps to not have to run in the consolation.
“In the feature started 17th and got boxed in a little in the beginning, but after a caution, I was able to get free and start picking off cars one by one and making my way towards the front. Ended up getting to third at the checkered for another solid and consistent night.”

Brett Grim finished 4th from his 5th starting position posting his 2nd top five finish in row since changing to coils about a month ago.
Brett noted “In hot laps and the heat race the car felt extremely good on the bottom, we ended up P2 in the heat race which had us starting 6th in the feature.”

“They made an announcement that the sportsman feature would be first, but we didn’t make any changes for that since they did very light track prep. In the feature we started 5th due to 2 cars opting to the rear. We got up to 2nd quickly and I was right on Shannon, but the car just kept getting tight on entry. I should have tried the bottom when it was getting tight, and I’m kicking myself in the butt for that, but that’s how you learn. I got the right rear too hot at the end of the feature and was a hair too free and lost 2 spots and ended up 4th. Definitely happy with a 4th but not satisfied. Thank you to all my sponsors for all their support and to my entire family for all their help and support. A big congratulations to Shannon on being the first woman to win at Grandview!”

TJ Mayberry finished 5th from his 13th starting position.
TJ commented “Obstacles have been the handicapping system. The car has been good for the last few weeks, but it’s been a battle in the heat races trying to get into a handicap spot. It feels like we’ve been good setup wise, but we seem to keep getting caught up mishaps during the feature. We’ve been trying our best to get what we can in the features.”

“Last night we felt decent in warmups. In the heat I just stayed patient and made moves when I could and ended up third. We knew we would be the first feature, but we also knew they weren’t going to rework the track at all. We had a good idea of what we wanted to do with the setup. Starting 13th, we started on the bottom and just kind of maintained our position for the first half of the race. On the restart we were able to move to the top and that’s where it really felt the best. We worked our way forward and finished 5th. One more lap and we would have had 4th. Overall, it was a very good night for us.”

Next up on Saturday, August 2 will be Modifieds & Sportsman with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7:30 pm.
