SPORTSMAN PIT NOTES – 7/5/25

Colin Cox finished first from his 17th starting position and posted his second win of the season at Grandview.
In victory lane Colin reflected “We missed the early wrecks, and I stayed with the top to get into 8th by lap 3. On a single file restart everyone in front of me went to the bottom so I stayed with the top and was able to pass several cars at a time. Made the pass for the lead in turn 3/4 on lap 10.”
“This is my second year in this car and came into racing at Grandview with no expectations so with already two wins in seven races we are far beyond my wildest dreams and have a half of a season to go.”
Back at the trailer Colin noted “Yeah, we had a good car all night. I got a pretty good start in the heat race and was able to work my way up to fifth, catching fourth at the line and just missing the handicap.

“I ended up starting 17th in the feature and missed a wreck early and gained about three or four spots. I kind of started picking them off one at a time running the bottom but then I ended up getting to the top and started picking them off again. On that single file restart, I was up to 6th and the whole top five kind of just went to the bottom, so I stayed up top where they weren’t and was able to get around them all and take the lead earlier than I thought to be honest. I was able to just hold the lead and run my own race. On that restart with about nine or 10 to go when I went to pick the top I saw on the scoreboard that Gilmore was up to fourth, so I knew he’d be right behind me. I figured if I got a good start and was able to get out front in front of Chase, I should be fine holding everyone off for the win.”

Brent Gilmore finished 2nd from his 25th starting position.
Brett recalled “In the heat I couldn’t get anything going and it was just one lane on the bottom in the first heat. Just consolation the car wasn’t that great either just too loose and couldn’t get it rolling the best.”

“The feature is where the car just wanted to work. We made some minor changes and basically just threw in the same setup as last week. The track fit last week’s setup better. I kept my nose clean and just got breaks where I needed them. I’ll be honest I don’t even know how I got into the top 10, I just know once we got strung out a little, I could pick people off here and there. The car just works on the bottom. They think they are on the bottom until I come along and drive underneath them. On that last restart I just ran the top because I knew I didn’t have the gear at the end. Track slowed down a bunch and that’s my kind of track for sure. Track slows down and need to drive the car. So, I ran the top but just had nothing for Colin. He was an absolute missile last night. Starting 25th and getting to second reminded me of back in 2016 when I did that a lot. This right side Panhard bar, it definitely changed the racing and made it more fun all way around.”

Chase Gular finished 3rd from his 3rd starting position to post his best finish of the season.
Chase started the season with qualifying in three consecutive races with a best finish of 11th. The next three races were all DNQ’s but this week everything came together for Chase and the 2g as he won his heat race and led the feature for six laps finishing with a solid 3rd place podium position.

Chase stated “We have been having issues with our motor and finally figured out the problem. It was more serious of an issue than we thought, so the motor we have in the car now is borrowed. It was good right away in warmups and the heat which we won.”
“Started 3rd in the feature, got the lead on the first lap and led up to I think lap 8 or 9 running 2nd till a caution came out. Gilmore got me with around 5 to go and just held on for 3rd from there.”

Mikey Schneck finished 4th from his 19th starting position. Mikey took a different route than Colin Cox and arrived a bit later but, in the end, he too went +15 in a strong front to back run.
Mikey has had strong consistency at both Big Diamond on Fridays and Grandview on Saturdays and sits second in points at both tracks.
Mikey noted “Heat race was ok. I saw Brightbill getting turned in front of me, so I went high and Grim got spun too and I had to stop to avoid him. I Was able to make passes and get back up to the front and qualify into the feature.

“Feature started off good, in the beginning just kind of got boxed in which usually happens when starting in the back. I was able to avoid a few early wrecks. I was going to the bottom and then the top for the first couple of laps then gravitated to the bottom. I saw cars in front of me running the top at the halfway mark, so I went up there and had to move around when people saw the top was the place to be. Overall, a good night getting another top 5.”

Teague Miller finished 5th from his 8th starting position and posted his best finish of the season at Grandview.
Teague commented “Yeah, this season had had a lot of ups and downs so far but that’s racing right? We started off good at big diamond and then we just couldn’t really find the car at Grandview so far this season. We either got caught into something or I just made some new driver mistakes, with it only being my second season I still have a lot to learn. We started off the season not super terrible at Grandview and have qualified in all seven races this season. These last few weeks of racing haven’t been our best. After a rough twin 20 week we just needed to take a step back. We put our heads together and decided to just get back to having fun with it because at the end of the day we all do this for fun and the love of racing.“

This past weekend we rolled out for the heat race p4 and quickly got into 3rd. A caution moved us into 2nd and on the restart, we got the lead. Once in clean air and a clear track and I really focused on running my lines and feeling the car out.”
All night the car felt really good and comfortable. We then made some changes to the car for the feature that we felt were necessary and then went out to roll off from 8th. The whole feature was just trying to move around and see what we could find when we finally were able to make some passes. I stayed to the bottom for a little until I saw Colin drive around me on the top. I went up there with him and made a few passes and picked up some ground. In the end we came home moving forward with a solid 5th and were very happy with the car and the team. We are going to try and keep this momentum rolling into next week’s Firecracker 40 and stay focused.

Kyle Hartzell had a strong 5th place finish last week and was on his way to qualifying in the heat again when he got a contact flat tire that sent him to the pits and consolation. In the consolation he came up one spot short and was first alternate but a late scratch gave Kyle the 27th starting position which he used to wheel his way to an 11th place finish while also moving up in the points standings to 10th place from 13th.

Next up on Saturday, July 12 will be 55th annual FIRECRACKER 40 Sportsman 40 & Modifieds – Hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7:30 pm.
