Cautions breed Cautions. That is a term you hear a lot in NASCAR races, and we had the case of that towards the end of the Craftsman Truck Series’ SpeedyCash.com 250. Despite the chaotic ending to the race, Kyle Busch, driving the No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado for Spire Motorsports took home the checkered flag for his sixth Truck Series win at Texas Motor Speedway.
Busch’s victory ties Todd Bodine for the most Truck Series wins at the 1.5-mile oval, and he has now won the last four Truck Series races that he has entered at TMS. Not only that, this marks Busch’s 20th overall win, across all three series there as well. Busch led for 112 of the 167 laps in the race, sweeping both stages as well.
“Great team, everybody here at Spire Motorsports,” said Busch, who now has 66 career wins in the series.
“They definitely kept me honest, I’ll give them that,” Busch added.
“Corey [Heim] kept us honest right there,” he continued. “He started to find that top over there and got some momentum over there with three to go. I chattered really bad, so my front just wasn’t working over there. He made it and got to my rear bumper getting into [turn] three and I just didn’t know which way to go so I ran the middle then to the bottom and then he slipped up top and I guess we had enough of a gap after that.”
Corey Heim continued his perfect streak of finishing in the top ten every season, as he finished runner-up to Busch by 0.112 seconds.
“It just seemed like a big track position game at the end there,” said Heim after the race. “He’d get really big runs on the straightaways and once you get to the corner it’s really hard to stay behind someone and keep the momentum.”
“I did all I could there trying to pick up three [positions] on that last restart but got another caution there unfortunately and just tried to build a run on him, but he’s just too good and does a really good job. Really happy with our run tonight, picked up stage points and finished second.”
Christian Eckes led for 31 laps, while Nick Sanchez led for 16, despite the domination from the driver they call “Rowdy.” Sanchez would finish third with Eckes behind him in fourth. Cup Series rookie Zane Smith finished in fifth, while Daniel Dye, Taylor Gray, Tanner Gray, Stefan Parsons, and Ty Majeski completed the top ten. Tyler Ankrum, the points leader heading into Friday’s race, had his night end early after he was involved in an accident on Lap 2, and would finish 34th. Ankrum would drop to sixth in the points after the incident. Eckes would take the points lead with a two-point lead over Corey Heim.
The Truck Series heads next to Kansas Speedway on Saturday, May 4th, for the Heart of America 200 at 8 pm EST.
