After 7 years of racing weekly at New Egypt Speedway Tommy Princiotta is taking his Tommy Gun Racing team on the road for the 2023 season to some different tracks and scenery this year. Over the years Tommy has gone South with the Short Track Super Series South Region Tour. For the 2023 he’s heading west to race at BAPS Motor Speedway in an 11race season and going North to run the Dirtcar Sportsman division in Central and Western New York.
Tommy noted “So for 2023 we are going to chase the points championship at BAPS Motor Speedway. We are also putting together a 2nd car to run up north with the DIRTcar sportsman tour in the Central and West regions of New York. On off weekends at BAPS, we plan on racing at Bridgeport Speedway and possibly a little traveling to some other tracks in NY. This will be the first time we’ve competed full time in a NY series since we ran the King of Dirt back in 2016. We’re very excited to get a change of scenery and compete at new tracks that we have never raced on before. The level of competition in the DIRTcar sportsman series is extremely high, so we are look forward to going up against some of the best sportsman drivers in the northeast at some very challenging track. As for BAPS, we did race there a couple times last year and had some pretty good success on a slicked off driver’s track. We were impressed with the track and liked the racing there, so with their expanded 11 race schedule this season we are excited to call BAPS our home track for weekly points and be part of helping the crate sportsman class grow in central PA. I do not plan to follow the Short Track Super Series South region this season for the first time in many years but may hit an STSS race here or there when they are nearby at New Egypt or Bridgeport in 2023.”
Tommy & Brandon Solarski have collaborated to expand “Tommy Gun Racing” to a two-car operation with the addition of a 2022 Bicknell to be used for the DIRTcar series and New York travel. Last year’s car will continue to be the car used for weekly points at BAPS & NJ/PA racing during the 2022 season.
Tommy reflected “I started racing in 2008 at New Egypt in Outlaw Street Stocks and then moved up to the 602 Crate division in 2015. My best season was 2021 when we posted two feature wins with one win at New Egypt and a win at Bridgeport. That brings us to the 2022 season which was highlighted by my career best success on road trips. We started the season by heading south with the Short Track Super Series hitting Cherokee, SC and the Sunshine Swing where we were able to pick up a 2nd place finish at one of the Sunshine tour nights. We had a fair amount of weeks off at New Egypt, so we hit the road on every one of them. We racked up a handful of heat race wins at different tracks and got a feature win at Thunder Mountain Speedway. During the 2022 we raced at an all-time high of 13 different tracks in 6 different states. New tracks for us in 2022 were Alltech, North Florida, Port Royal & BAPS. New Egypt had two different point series this season and we finished 3rd in the “High Gear Towing points and 4th in the New Egypt points standings. We also posted our career best 8th place finish in the Short Track Super Series South Region points standings.”
Tommy continued “As far as our 2023 goals, we want to be competitive every week and every track that we unload the car. We want to compete for the BAPS points championship and finish top 5 in both DIRT regions. Obviously just like always we want to win every week that we hit the track no matter where we are racing. I’m just very excited to have a change of scenery this year and do something new. I’m not sure any sportsman guys from NJ or this area has competed on a full-time basis with a DIRT series before so it will cool to the first or one of the first, to do so.”
“I would like to thank each of our sponsors for supporting us year after year and without them none of this would be possible.” Another big thank you goes out to Brandon Solarski who is my crew chief who works countless hours maintaining the car and keeping me on the track as well as constantly bouncing ideas at me about setup changes and how we can get the car faster. Brandon invests tons of time and money into the car every season. It’s very hard to find guys like him and I’m glad to have him by my side.”
