Tom Sherby led the Beach Blast from green to checkered and endured 5 cautions to win his second career Beach Blast only to have his right rear blow out on the cool down lap only 3 turns after taking the checkered flag and his second win of the season.
Tom’s race day started with a Cape May Ferry ride for the truck and trailer as he arrived at Georgetown via his traditional Ferry ride from his home of Cape May, NJ to Delaware. Tom finished his day by picking up his second Blast at the Beach win over a stellar field of STSS competitors.
Tom started on the pole and opened up some large leads only to have five cautions bunch the field back up. Sherby took the checkered flag by a 1.26 margin of victory over Ryan Simmons and then proceeded to blow his right rear in turn 3 moments after taking the checkered flag limping into victory lane with his lucky flat tire.
In victory lane Tom reflected “We played the tire game tonight and was one turn away from losing it. The tire blew in turn 3 and I was thinking if there was one more yellow, I would have been done. Yellows are always a concern when your leading. Everyone here is fast and running well. When your running up front you don’t know which line is best and what is going on behind you. I watched the modified feature and they stayed on the bottom in the end, so I decided to stay on the bottom until someone goes around me on the outside. Car was hooked up as you can see the right rear is gone and it did exactly what it was supposed to do with a 48 on there. It is what it is and now we get to play the tech game. This is one of the best tracks we run at and we always like coming down here. We call it Delabama, and it is a great place to drive a racecar.”
Postrace Tom commented “we came over on the late Ferry due to the day change, so we were kind of in a rush to catch up getting there. But we made it in time for drivers meeting. A buddy of mine who races 4 cylinders drew the #3 chip for me in the heat race starting us on the pole for heat race #3. Drove our heat race with a little struggling but we’re able to win the heat.
“The redraw for the feature had me nervous, but somehow, I was able to pick the #1 hat and start the A-main on the pole too. We knew we had to conserve tires with only having an old 48 for the feature. So that played heavy into our setup and how hard I could drive the car knowing the pack was coming for me. Towards the end of the race with all the yellows I got really nervous about the RR blowing after watching so many modifieds loose tires. On the caution laps I was going to the top or bottom of the track trying to find cool dirt that hopefully would save the tires as much as possible. Fortunately for us we made it the 25 laps before the RR blew going into turn 3 after the checkered flag and we crossed the scale and put it in victory lane with a flat RR tire! One more yellow and I wouldn’t have made it to the win. Track was really dry and slick even in warmups, so we knew it was going be hard on a 48 tire but that’s all we had and there was no RR there to buy. Overall, it was a great night for us and we’re just trying to chase the wins the best as we can this season.”
