News that had been rumored since the August 25 meeting of the Washington Township Board of Supervisors was confirmed by Grandview Speedway owner Theresa Rogers today. The 60 year history of Grandview Speedway appears to be over with the checkered flag on the 2022 Freedom 76er. The Bechtelsville, PA facility confirmed that an agreement is in place for COPART to purchase the 35 acre facility and zoning approval is being sought to convert the land into a non-racing facility.
In a prepared statement, the Speedway is quoted as saying, “Over the past weekend news became public when the COPART company went to Washington Township, where Grandview Speedway is located, and submitted a proposal to township officials that will place them on the township agenda for a future meeting. Nothing has been discussed with Township officials to this point in time.” What is most interesting about that particular bit of the news is the lack of information on a whether a contingency is included in the sale agreement that ends the deal if zoning approval is not granted by the Township. “For the time being there is no further information that we know. When there is more information, we will issue another release” stated Mrs. Rogers.
This is truly a massive blow to auto racing in Pennsylvania, as only one large dirt facility will remain east of winged 410 sprint car country, with the Big Diamond Speedway in Schuylkill County the lone survivor. NRN approached Big Diamond officials for comment, but they declined to make a statement or answer questions. Oh and how there are so many questions that remain to be answered. What lies ahead for the teams that have called Grandview home for so many years. Some have made starts at places like Bridgeport, New Egypt, and even into Delaware and New York; but they all return home to the Hill in Bechtelsville. What becomes of the Thunder on the Hill series of events?
With so many questions still up in the air, the NRN team is working hard on this story and will have more in the coming days.
