This past Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course showed that AJ Allmendinger is definitely the king of the road courses and always a force to be reckoned with. This win at the Pennzoil 150 marked four of the last five Xfinity Road Course races won by Allmendinger.
Allmendinger led 42 of the 62 laps in the race, scoring his third win of the season, which have all been on road courses. He passed Alex Bowman, who finished runner-up, after a restart on lap 45 and pulled out to a 2.084-second lead by the time the checkered flag flew.
“God, I love this place,” Allmendinger said in his post-race interview, “I knew Bowman was really good at the long runs, and so I tried to gap him as much as I could. God, I love Indy!”
Allmendinger lost many spots early due to a pit stop on lap 16 when there were issues with the right rear tire of his No. 16 Chevrolet. Fortunately, he was able to fight his way back to restart third on lap 29.
“We gave up stage points a little bit there as well, to the guys we’re fighting for points,” Allmendinger said. “But you know what? Points don’t mean a damn thing. We’re kissing the bricks. Hell, yeah!”
Alex Bowman was cutting into Allmendinger’s lead in the final 18 laps but didn’t have enough time to chase down the No. 16.
“I probably was a little too nice on that last restart,” said Bowman afterward. “I knew he was going to be better than us firing off, At the end, we were definitely running him down, just not enough laps.”
Justin Allgaier finished third, Ross Chastain finished fourth, and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Riley Herbst, Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, and Noah Gragson. Jr Motorsports swept both stages with Noah Gragson taking stage one and Josh Berry taking stage two.
