Roughly an hour after his crash at Iowa Speedway, Josef Newgarden was taken by helicopter to an a local hostpital. Newgarden was released from the infield medical center after his crash on lap 235 and spoke with reporters, but shortly after that fell in the bus lot. According to IndyCar’s medical chief Dr. Geoffrey Bellows, Newgarden was awake and alert after being taken back to the infield care center, but the decision was made to take him to a local hospital for futher evaluation. Dr. Bellows explained the use of the helicopter, saying that it was purely due to the distance of the nearest hospital and the amount of traffic surrounding the speedway. Dr. Bellows also noted that Newgarden triggered the amount of Gs in the crash that would require a followup check in several days, which is at least 40.
