Tom Sherby found his way into victory lane at Bridgeport Motorsports Park for his biggest win and payday of this career as he took the win by a 4 second margin of victory and led every lap of the 25 lap feature from the pole position.
In his heat race Tom started 2nd and grabbed the lead on the start and led green to checkered to take his first win of the night.
Tom continued his hot streak as he drew the feature pole position in the redraw. At the green Tom grabbed the lead and never looked back in the one caution 25 lap A Main and took the checkered flag by nearly 4 seconds over 2nd place Matt Ellery and 3rd place Ryan Godown Jr. He parked it in victory lane for his first win of 2022 and most fittingly at Bridgeport which has been his home track for the past 7 years. Tom has raced on the old 5/8 mile track; 3/8 mile track and tonight posted his first win on the high banks track at Bridgeport Motorsports Park.
Postrace Tom reflected “We knew it was going to be a challenging track since we were racing after the wingless sprints and if I kept hitting my line every lap and we should be the fastest car out there. We have been trying to race the short track super series and traveling makes it harder getting set up right especially with a brand new car. After racing here last Saturday night we felt we had a car good enough to win hear tonight and just needed to have a good pill pull to do it. Last week we started 11th and ended up 4th and knew we were getting very close with our setup. Everything came together for us when we finally found our setup this Saturday and then just drew the front row all night long. We were very fortunate to only have only one very early caution and did not have to deal with any late cautions and restarts. It was our night and my biggest payday of my career.”
This year Tom has decided to run an outlaw schedule and race primarily the short track super series and any big money races at Bridgeport, Georgetown and Delaware International rather than weekly racing at one track due to rising costs.
Tom noted “We were very fortunate to have all our sponsors to come together which allowed us to upgrade in a big way from our 2013 Bicknell to a 2021 Bicknell from Hoffman speed supply. It’s been challenging switching to a left side pan hard on bars, but it seems to be working well now after once we went through the learning curve and experimentation to get it setup right. This new car has been like starting all over again and I don’t know what we would have done without help from Neal Williams who always goes above and beyond for us. The new car has been totally night and day different from the our old car. I always said our old car was a handful and like driving a super stiff brick. In comparison our new car is very touchy and tiny little adjustments make a ton off difference where the old car it took a ton of change to get the car to react. This new car is very smooth and easy to drive.”
Tom won the STSS Beach Blast in 2019 which was his biggest win of his career. One little known fact is he was also probably the first winner in short track super series history to arrive at a race using a ferry boat. Tom uses the Cape May Ferry from his home in Cape May, NJ to all his Delaware races. That’s a good one for the short track super series record books.
Tom commented “We decided to run an outlaw schedule this year and chase the short track super series and other big money races. Last Saturday we came to a weekly race at Bridgeport to get dialed it for tonight’s $2,000. I don’t think we could have been successful tonight without making that trip and it’s just great to get the biggest win of my career at a track that I have ran weekly for the past 7 years. This is a great start for us and we are hoping this is just the beginning of our success with this new car this year.”
“I can’t thank my sponsors and dad enough for making all this happen and giving me the opportunity to live the dream:
Boulevard Bait and Tackle Aquatic Dock Supply
Bucktails Outfitters
Butterwood Tree Service
Coastal Welding
Surran’s Nursery
Viking Mold and Tool”
