Marcus Ericsson won the Indianapolis 500 in dramatic fashion, holding off Pato O’Ward and Tony Kanaan in a two lap shootout after Jimmie Johnson brought out a late red flag. Ericsson took the lead after the last round of pitstops, and never gave it up, holding off a last ditch effort by O’Ward on the last lap.
Ericsson takes the lead of the chapionship standings thanks to double points at Indy and bad finishes for what seemed like all the championship frontrunners, and O’Ward jumps up to P2. O’Ward finished second, followed by Kanaan, Rosenqvist, Rossi, Daly, Castroneves, Pagenaud, Palou, and Ferrucci rounding out the top 10. There were multiple single car wrecks, with Johnson, McLaughlin, Grosjean, Veekay, and Ilott all wrecking out.
