The NASCAR Cup Series celebrated the sport’s history this weekend at Darlington Raceway for throwback weekend in the Goodyear 400. In an exciting race, Joey Logano worked in the closes laps to chase down William Byron, who was looking for his third win of the season. On the final restart with 26 to go, William Byron and Joey Logano made contact that gave Byron the lead in his Jeff Gordon throwback from 2007. It looked like Byron was pulling away until Logano began to reel him in. Then with two laps to go, Joey Logano had caught Byron and as they both went into turn 3 and coming to the white flag, Joey Logano gave the bump n’ run to Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet, giving Joey Logano his first points win of 2022 and his first since the 2021 Bristol Dirt Race. Logano also won the Busch Light Clash at the LA Coliseum back in February.
“You’re not gonna put me in the wall and not get anything back. That’s how that works,” Logano said with a smile in his post-race interview. “So proud of this race team, great execution all day long. The coolest thing is getting this car into victory lane, this is the car where it all started for me back in ’95 in a quarter midget. All the young kids racing out there, this could be you!”
Joey Logano was referring to the throwback of his very first race car when his dad bought him a quarter midget.
“We were really close and I think it spooked him, got tight and he was right against the wall and I got the lead,” William Byron said in his post-race interview, “He’s just an idiot. I mean he does this stuff all the time. I’ve seen it with other guys.”
“He slammed me so hard, it knocked all the right side off the car and sent me into the corner. He’s just a moron, he can’t win a race. So he does it that way.”
Tyler Reddick finished second followed by Justin Haley, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, Michael McDowell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Austin Dillon, and Daniel Suarez. William Byron would finish 13th after having a flat tire from being bumped in the rear end by Logano.
The NextGen car made its debut on NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway that provided very interesting and exciting racing, which also led to some top competitors having a rough day. Such as Kyle Larson having an engine failure on lap 112 and Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski being involved in a wreck that took them out of the running. Ross Chastain, who won stage two, lost control of his car on a restart and wrecked out in stage three as well.
