Justin Allgaier joins his JR Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Josh Berry to win a race in the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series Season, as he took the checkered flag in his Dale Earnhardt Wrangler throwback. This was Allgaier’s first win since this exact race a year ago on May 8, 2021. Allgaier passed AJ Allmendinger for the lead with two laps to go on the final restart to earn his 17th career Xfinity Series victory, where he had to start from the rear after having to replace a battery.
“Got the job done,” Allgaier said in his post-race interview, “I could see everybody standing those last few laps. It’s a sight for sore eyes as rough as it has been. This team right here, pit stops today were killing it, they were awesome. This Hellmann’s Camaro was so fast…”
One bizarre moment came on the final lap, as the white flag did not wave, which sent a bit of panic to Allgaier. There were communication issues between the NASCAR tower and the flagstand, which led to the white flag not being displayed. NASCAR quickly stated that the final lap of the race had begun once Allgaier’s No. 7 Camaro crossed the start and finish line. Allgaier also commented on that after the race.
“Listen, you go 34 races without winning, the last 20 laps, like the wheels were falling off in my mind,” Allgaier said. “You heard every sound from the parts hitting the car. I’m expecting everybody to crash. Like there are all these scenarios going on in my head. The white flag not coming out did not help that at all. So, I was in a little bit of panic mode.”
Teammate Noah Gragson finished second, Riley Herbst in third, John Hunter Nemechek and Sam Mayer rounded out the top five. Then to round out the top 10 were Landon Cassill, Brandon Jones, AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric, and Austin Hill.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series will have the next weekend off, then go to the Lone Star State at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 21st at 1:30 PM EST.
