Newgarden Powers Past McLaughlin; Penske Dominates in Texas Thriller

Josef Newgarden completed an incredible pass on the final lap to take his second win at Texas Motor Speedway, and the 600th win across all series for Penske. Newgarden passed his teammate Scott McLaughlin across turns 3 and 4 for the win after McLaughlin led 185 laps, the most in the race. The race stayed green for the last two pit cycles, setting up a fascinating fuel run to the end.

Johnson impressed in his oval debut (Penske Entertainment: Chris Owens)

The race was punctuated by four caution periods, three of which were caused by Devlin DeFrancesco, as he made contact with Takuma Sato, Kyle Kirkwood, Graham Rahal, and Helio Castroneves. Kirkwood impressed in his Indy oval debut, as did Jimmie Johnson, who came on strong during the last half of the race to pick up a P6, his best finish to date in IndyCar, and his first top 10. McLaughlin extended his lead in the standings, as Penske and Ganassi took all top 7 spots. Ericsson led the Ganassi cars in P3, with Power in P4. Dixon, Johnson, and then Palou filled out the top 7.
