Michael “Buddy” Kofoid out of Penngrove, California has had a full slate of racing thus far in the 2021 campaign. The 19-year-old who now resides in Indiana has been driving for some of the best teams in dirt track racing while also getting races in an asphalt late model to put on his resume. Kofoid is in hopes that this will all culminate into racing in NASCAR one day.
The current USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget point leader for Keith Kunz Motorsports has driven for top sprint car teams in 2021 when the midget schedules open up such as: Reinbold-Underwood Motorsports, Chris Dyson Racing, Swindell Speedlab, and CJB Motorsports.
“Luckily I’ve been able to find some time to pick some races out and getting in a sprint car is still important to me and I try to do it as much as I can,” said Kofoid prior to night five of Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek at Grandview Speedway.
Kofoid kicked his 2021 campaign off strong by picking up two wins during January’s Wild Wing Shootout at Arizona Speedway for Reinbold-Underwood Motorsports. Kofoid has remained hot when taking his talents to the midget scene in the USAC and POWERi ranks by collecting four wins with USAC, seven wins with POWERi, and the Indiana Midget Week championship as of July 1st.
“Things have been clicking really good so hopefully we can keep that up and hopefully roll that into a national championship,” noted Kofoid about his dirt season thus far.
Dirt isn’t the only form of racing for Kofoid this year as he is also racing asphalt late models when his midget commitment allows. Kofoid is racing for Racing Dynamiks in the first step for the Toyota Racing Development driver to try and fulfill his dream of racing one day in the NASCAR circuit.
“NASCAR has always really been my goal. Especially being with Toyota now these last couple of years,” notes Kofoid. “They have all the right tools and all of the connections to help me get there. They have the right path and made me realize that goal could become a reality hopefully in the future.”
